Roomba Battery Troubleshooting

Q: What are the common reasons for short running time of a Roomba?

A: Here are a couple of common reasons for short running time of a Roomba:

1. Charging system of Roomba is not working properly and needs to be reset. Please see below for detailed procedures on how to reset Roomba charging system. It is recommended that you always try these steps first before ordering a new battery. Otherwise, you might be experiencing the same issue even with a new battery.

2. Battery is dying and won’t hold its charge. It is time to replace the old battery with a new battery. You can buy brand new replacement battery for your Roomba or  Scooba from the links below:

Q: How to reset the charging system of my Roomba charging system?

A: If your Roomba charging light becomes solid green (indicating a fully charged battery), but the charging time and running time are very short (less than 20 minutes), then you need to reset the charging system.

Step 1.  For Roomba 4xx and 4xxx series: Remove the battery and unplug the charger from AC outlet. Hold down "POWER" button for at least 15 seconds, and then      reinstall the battery

Step 1.  For Roomba 500 Series: Remove the battery and unplug the charger from AC outlet. Hold down both "SPOT" and “DOCT” button for at least 15 seconds, and then reinstall the battery.

Step 2. Plug the charger directly into Roomba (do not use the home base in this case) to charge the battery.

Step 3. Charge the battery Roomba power light becomes solid green.

Step 4. Keep charging the battery for additional 72 hours (3 days) without any interruption.

Step 5. In Max mode, run the Roomba for a complete cycle (without home base) to deplete the battery. If runtime improves, repeat above steps 2 more times. If your Roomba does not have Max mode, run several clean cycles until your Roomba depletes its battery.

You should observe longer runtimes after performing above procedures if the short runtime problem is caused by a mal-function of the Roomba charging system. If you don’t see obvious improvement of the running time, then it is time to purchase a new battery.
